SALARY RANGE: $33,897 to $52,895

 

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage and coordinate the assigned school’s health services program based on requirements established by school division policies, procedures, and protocols.  Governed by local, state and national regulations and statutes.  Maintain and operate the school clinic including the supervision of clinic staff.

 

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

  • Ensure compliance with procedures, protocol and other instructions as outlined and authorized by the supervising medical staff appointed by BCPS, provided by the Nurse Coordinator or contained in division policies and manuals.
  • Provide nursing care to students; assess students and implement first aid measures for students as needed.
  • Initiate emergency procedures for students and staff as needed.
  • Implement and record required screenings; notify parents when further medical evaluation is needed.
  • Establish and update accurate health and immunization records.
  • Assume responsibility for appropriate assessments, planning, intervention, evaluation, management and referral activities for students.
  • Maintain student clinic records and prepare required reports.
  • Provide medically prescribed interventions, including medication administration as prescribed by the student’s physician.
  • Carry out communicable disease prevention and infection control based on current OSHA guidelines for universal precautions, prevention of bloodborne pathogens exposure and hazardous medical waste disposal; provide annual OSHA Exposure Control training for school staff.
  • Communicate specific health needs of students to other school personnel, as appropriate and allowable.
  • Participate as a team member in the Child Study process, in Section 504 and in IEP meetings to share relevant information concerning the special health care needs of students in the school setting.
  • Collaborate with parents/guardians and physicians to implement individualized healthcare plans of students.
  • Orient and train all relevant staff members with regard to medical procedures for students with specific medical needs (e.g. Health Aide, Insulin and Glucagon, Signs of Anaphylaxis, EpiPen Administration, as well as other medical action plans, etc.).
  • Identify the need for and provide for health education.
  • Act as a liaison between the school, home, health department and other community agencies to coordinate health care initiatives.
  • Follow procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
  • Maintain clinic equipment and consumable supplies on an annual basis.
  • Manage and organize both time and resources in order to meet responsibilities.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Perform related work as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

The ability to use clinic and  medical equipment.  Possess basic pharmacological knowledge. Ability to access emergency situations and act accordingly. Knowledge of universal procedures and ability to teach this to others. Good oral and written communication skills. Basic computer skills. Willing attitude to be a part of the school team, strong sense of professionalism, organization skills, common sense and  motivation and positive attitude.  The ability and willingness to participate in ongoing professional and staff development both independently and through system offered opportunities.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduate from an accredited nursing program and or Bachelor of Nursing degree.  Licensed as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia and in good standings with the Virginia Board of Nursing. A minimum of one to three years nursing experience and experience in community health, pediatrics, emergency care in triage, psychiatry, and/or a physician's office preferred.  

 

A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movement, simple grasping, pushing and pulling, fine motor and gross motor skills, bending, lifting, squatting, kneeling, climbing, and reaching. Ability to lift students as required and has the stamina to stand all day, every day of the week as needed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Current/Valid certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid from a recognized provider.
