GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The Head Football Coach will lead and oversee all aspects of the high school football program, promoting athletic development, teamwork, and sportsmanship while maintaining a high standard of academic achievement and conduct. The coach will plan, organize, and deliver a successful football program that reflects the goals and values of James River High School.

 

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

Team Leadership and Player Development:

  • Provide leadership and guidance to all players, assistant coaches, and program staff.
  • Design and implement training programs that build players' physical, technical, and mental skills.
  • Create an inclusive and positive team culture, emphasizing character development, respect, and discipline.
  • Set clear expectations and goals for players, focusing on skill improvement, teamwork, and academic achievement.

Game Strategy and Preparation:

  • Develop and execute effective game plans that maximize the team’s strengths and address areas for improvement.
  • Scout opponents, analyze game footage, and adjust strategies to ensure optimal game performance.
  • Lead the team during practices, scrimmages, and games with a focus on growth, effort, and respect.

Program Administration:

  • Manage team logistics, including scheduling practices, arranging transportation, and coordinating equipment needs.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all players by maintaining a secure environment and adhering to all health and safety protocols.
  • Oversee budget management, fundraisers, and allocation of resources to support the football program.
  • Ensure compliance with all state, district, and school policies as well as applicable athletic regulations.

Communication and Community Engagement:

  • Maintain open communication with players, parents, school staff, and the community to foster support for the football program.
  • Work with the Athletic Director to promote games, recruit players, and engage the community through events and volunteer opportunities.
  • Act as a role model, representing the school’s values and the importance of sportsmanship and academic achievement.

Academic and Behavior Accountability:

  • Monitor academic performance of players, ensuring they meet eligibility requirements and offering guidance as needed.
  • Enforce school and team rules consistently, addressing any behavioral issues in a fair and constructive manner.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

The coach is responsible for organizing out of season workouts, tryouts and season practices.  They are to collaborate with the administration and athletic director in regards to all scheduling that impacts the sport.  The coaching staff is expected to work diligently to field athletic teams with student/athletes that represent BCPS with quality players that show strong character daily.  It is expected the coaching staff will always be cognizant of the leadership and visibility of a public school coach.  At no time should a coach compromise professionalism while representing BCPS in a coaching capacity.  Coaches are asked to work closely with athletic directors and administration during any issues that may resolve in additional support.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and certified teacher preferred.
  • Experience in coaching high school or collegiate football; prior experience as a Head Coach or Assistant Coach is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of football rules, regulations, and best practices for player safety.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, strong communication skills, and a commitment to student-athlete development.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (required); other coaching certifications as required by the state or school district.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling,

reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid driver's license.

Must be able to successfully pass criminal background investigation
