GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Botetourt County Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Preschool teachers are responsible
for facilitating developmentally appropriate educational practices for students’ ages two-five based on
Virginia’s Foundation Blocks for Early Learning. Teachers utilize a whole language approach with a set
curriculum that promotes embedded executive functioning and symbolic play. Teachers identify
developmental stages and scaffold individual students’ needs in the areas of Cognition, Communication,
Social-Emotional, Adaptive, Gross Motor and Fine Motor skills.
ESSENTIAL TASKS:

- Develop weekly lesson plans that adhere to county-wide and curriculum based standards
? Ensure the health and safety of classroom students, including personal care and development
? Write and administer Individual Education Plans for preschoolers with disabilities
? Plan and attend child study, eligibility, and IEP meetings as needed
? Guide/support VPI teachers and Instructional Assistants working in the classroom environment
with students with disabilities
? Organize a variety of educational learning experiences in and outside of the classroom
? Adhere to school policies and attend required division meetings and professional trainings
? Perform required learning assessments that measure IEP goals and pre-kindergarten readiness
skills
? Create an environment with clear schedules, routines, and transitions conducive to learning
? Establish and maintain professional relationships with school personnel and the community
? Collaborate and communicate effectively with classroom staff and families
? Provide and allow for positive support strategies that promote student’s individual growth
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of BCPS curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum, BCPS policies and effective instructional practices; through understanding of the teaching and learning process; ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education; ability to infuse technology into curriculum; ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school based staff, students, parents and community; excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. Must have or be eligible for a teaching license from the Virginia Department of Education. Applicant should be dually endorsed in both P-K and early childhood special education or be willing to work towards that licensure.
A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing and pulling.
